Very interesting book. Lots of handwringing about making sure the reader knows Aztecs also had poetry in addition to human sacrifice so they weren’t all bad But this argument is obviously appealing to the reader’s presumed Christian sensibilities. The parts of the book that are most interesting are actually seeing a non-Christian non-Eurasian society.

Interesting part of the book is laying out history of migration to central and southern Mexico from US southwest. I didn’t realize that Nahuatl was part of the Uto-Aztecan family that includes Hopi, Shoshoni Comanche, but not Zuñi. Zuñi is actually a language isolate descended from very narrow groups that came directly from further north without being part of the whole auto-Aztecan migrations
