First off, major patches like this always come with new bugs, and this one has some whoppers. It will also draw a crowd, which is sure to hammer the servers. In order to ensure the game is still playable over the holidays, the current 3.24.3 patch is *also* live, and theyβre calling this 4.0 release a preview.

The biggest update here is the introduction of proper server meshing, allowing the number of concurrent players in a βshardβ to more than double to 500. This also allows the gateway which connects the Stanton and Pyro star systems and allows seamless travel between them, even by groups of folks traveling together.

The new Pyro system is huge, much bigger than Stanton. Pyroβs star is dying, and so no government is established there. Some factions vie for control, but in general Pyro is a lawless wasteland. There are valuable resources and rare items to find, so that means pirates and mercenaries will feel right at home.

There are also new so called Contested Zones, FPS PVP hotspots where you battle over collectible tokens. Collecting all of the tokens will allow a player to open the final door and claim the grand prize. These are stations and asteroid bases scattered around Pyro.

Thereβs a new ship, a new rifle, new animals, animations, AI dialog, updates to ship systems, balancing to ship systems (quantum fuel tanks get bigger), FOIP refinements, the ability to spawn into your personal hangar, and much more!
