How is it that the “do your own research” crowd (e.g., conspiracy theorists) also tend to be the ones who get to the wrong conclusions?

Belief in conspiracy is often driven by a deep idea that the individual has no control over their own life, thus a belief in some outside, super powerful cabal becomes the scapegoat for lack of responsibility. If things fail it's because "they" have made it so. Once this idea becomes entrenched any idea outside of this belief is from people working in league with "them" I used to be one of them, a full blown truther, then I got out by educating myself on psychology and sociology. It took awhile to crawl back out of the rabbit hole once you get deep enough to realise it's all nonsense

What was the turning point for you that lead you to want to do more research, and challenge your previous beliefs?
