Siddhartha Gautama the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini, India, to a wealthy and influential family. He grew up in luxury, but was exposed to suffering and injustice, which deeply troubled him. At 29 he renounced his princehood and embarked on a spiritual quest to understand and end suffering.
