Painful. ACAST (podcast hosting service + ad service) broadcasts pre-roll programmatic ads on shows they host. As a premium sub on Spotify I thought I wouldn't be targeted and exposed to programmatic ads :(

I think it is the podcast itself that enabled the ads via Acast, which is embedded into the pod's RSS, so it will play no matter the podcatcher.

may I recommend overcast? It won’t solve skipping ads, but you can set it to auto start at like :30 or 1:00 in to at least avoid the beginning ones!
