In the 19th century, Charles Frederick Worth (in English: Charles Frederick Worth) by sewing his name tag to the clothes he designed laid the groundwork for the beginning of fashion design in general. Just before the bazaars set up their own maisons (fashion houses) in Paris and a multitude of unknown tailors began to create and dismantle the high fashions worn in the royal courts. Worth's success was such that he was able to dictate to his customers what to wear, rather than behaving like other tailors in the past who simply followed the customer's orders. The term 'fashion designer' (in French: Couturier) was actually first coined to describe him. While the category of clothing has been studied and examined by academics in every period of time, only the creation of clothing from 1858 onwards can effectively be considered clothing design. It was during this period that many maisons of clothes (fashion houses) began to hire artists and painters to draw the design of the clothes.
