Goodreads was founded by Otis Chandler and Elizabeth Khuri Chandler in December 2006. Otis Chandler, inspired by a desire to share book recommendations, utilized his background in software engineering. Elizabeth Khuri Chandler also played a significant role in its development. In 2013, Amazon acquired Goodreads.
