Do casts get less engagement if you don't pick a channel?

No, they simplified it a lot more. Just cast to main feed. One thing that does happen if you post to a channel is you may get new followers. People who follow the channel you posted to but not you if that makes sense

i dont think so, channels dont add up much distribution

This used to be the case but now it goes to the same group of people regardless (your followers)

If you cast in a channel the only additional engagement you would get is if people were browsing the channel feed directly (barely anyone does)
