Ethereum was proposed by Vitalik Buterin, who was a programmer and blockchain researcher at the time. Vitalik introduced his idea in a whitepaper in late 2013. After raising funds through a public sale of Ether in mid-2014, the Ethereum mainnet was launched on July 30, 2015.
