The island of Thira is better known as Santorin or Santorini. It is one of the most visited Greek islands. People come here for the beaches with colorful sand, the amazing views and the ancient history.
Thira, along with the islands of Thirasia, Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni and Aspronisi, is part of a group of islands called Santorin. However, often when people say Santorin, they mean Thira.
The history of Thira has shaped its current position. The oldest population appeared here around 3000 B.C. However, around 1500 B.C. there was a violent volcanic eruption, which caused the crater to collapse and formed a huge caldera (sinkhole), which was immediately filled by the sea. Its depth reaches 400 meters.
