Tattoos in Europe In ancient Europe, the Celts and other tribes used tattoos to signify bravery, tribal identity, and protection in battle. With the rise of Christianity, tattoos fell out of favor, but they were reintroduced to the Western world by sailors encountering tattooed Indigenous peoples during their voyages.
