For food, I stick with the basics. Either real close, so that you can see food and some of the plate (not not the entire plate sides), from "eye" level. The other option is what you did, from above, straight on, but usually symmetry helps a bit with the general look of the pic.

No worries. I am a complete amateur. Photographers eye by Freedman is a great book. Also, google 5 rules of composure. Helps a ton to bring out the wow element in a photo.
