For food, I stick with the basics. Either real close, so that you can see food and some of the plate (not not the entire plate sides), from "eye" level. 

The other option is what you did, from above, straight on, but usually symmetry helps a bit with the general look of the pic.

No worries. I am a complete amateur. Photographers eye by Freedman is a great book. Also, google 5 rules of composure. Helps a ton to bring out the wow element in a photo.

It's also available in ebook format. But don't make this a work thing. No need to read for days. Googling composure rules will work wonders. 

The best advice I got when I started photography was "be at eye level". Why it works? Bcs you look at kids and animals from above. So when you see a photo of e.g. your kid or dog from eye level, it "speaks" to you. Also, plenty of people want to take a photo showing the shoes a person is wearing and whatnot. Sure, there's a time for that as well. But if you want to show character, do a close up. Head and shoulders is called like that for a reason. Sorry for the monologue 😀 i just love talking about this.
