Before driving to India, we went through a bureaucratic nightmare. We had to get a yearly carnet and pay a hefty $25,000 deposit just to drive the route, as countries like Iran, Pakistan, and India require it for entry A carnet is an international declaration needed for temporarily importing a vehicle into certain countries. It allows you to cross borders without paying customs duties. The $25,000 deposit is held in the UK (in our case) or Switzerland and is returned only after you prove the car has left those countries using stamped entries/exits in the carnet The document itself costs around $1,000, but it’s worth it for the adventure of a road trip
