While I will probably always be an Arch Linux user, the Linux From Scratch (LFS) project is an amazing way to learn about Linux internals and really understand how Linux works at a fundamental level.

There was this great operating systems lecture detailing how the complexity of hardware for most consumer devices has increased far past the ability for linux to service that forcing hardware vendors to write their own shitty software.
