Although Galileo Galilei is credited with the invention of the thermometer in 1592, his initial device, known as a thermoscope, lacked a numerical scale and only indicated changes in temperature. Evolution: Santorio Santorio later added a numerical scale between 1611 and 1613, creating the first thermometer capable of measuring temperatures quantitatively.
