In our village it was actually almost impossible to protect yourself. The gynecologist didn't prescribe birth control until I was 18. The nearest pharmacy only had pills for adult women who had given birth. And we just didn't have that kind of money, they cost a lot. If someone bought condoms, all 4 neighboring villages knew who he/she was dating. The only option was to go to town to buy condoms, but even then the bus driver knew everyone and called the parents. If they found out that the kids were in a serious relationship, they could send them to live with the guy. The logic is that if he "spoiled", then let his parents feed, clothe and raise their grandchildren. One in ten had a potbelly or a baby.
