You can come now.  The doctors are of the opinion that I shall not be alive till midnight to-morrow, and I imagine their calculations to be correct, or by a slight difference.

 James Ensor drew these based on a short story called "The Truth About Mr. Waldemar" by Edgar Allan Poe.
 The story is about a person who wants to use hypnosis to stop the death process of a person named Waldemar who has tuberculosis and is dying.  At the time of publication of the story, many thought that it was written based on reality.
