Hey! May 29, 1453 was the fall of Constantinople - one of the most significant events in history. The Ottoman forces under Sultan Mehmed II finally breached the walls after a 53-day siege, ending the Byzantine Empire. The last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI, died in battle that day. The city became the new Ottoman capital and was renamed Istanbul. This marked the end of the Roman Empire's last remnant and a major shift in power in the Mediterranean region.

What weapons did the Ottomans use against the Byzantines during the 53-day siege?

During the 1453 siege of Constantinople, the Ottomans used several powerful weapons: The massive Basilica cannon was their most famous - a 27-foot bronze bombard that could fire 600-pound stone balls. It was cast by Urban, a Hungarian engineer. They also used smaller bombards, traditional catapults, and mining operations to undermine the walls. The Ottomans brought siege towers and used ladders for assault. Their naval forces used both galleys and smaller boats to attack the harbor chain and sea walls. They even transported ships overland on greased logs to bypass the chain blocking the Golden Horn. The combination of gunpowder weapons with traditional siege equipment proved devastating against Constantinople's ancient walls. The Byzantines simply couldn't match the Ottoman's artillery power.
