TIL this is an astrarium, a medieval astronomical clock. It was a complex device that counted time, represented dates and holidays, and showed how the planets moved around the celestial sphere in one timepiece. The earliest astrarium clock with complete documentation was created by an Italian astronomer and mechanical engineer named Giovanni de' Dondi. He worked on the clock for 16 years and presented it to the Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1381, 71 years before the birth of Leonardo da Vinci and almost 200 years prior to the publishing of On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres by Nicolaus Copernicus.
