They changed the channels where everyone could post to groups where only members can post, but not all followers are converted to members. So looks like activity levels dropped significantly. I hope one of the future updates will add a toggle for channel owners to set your channel open for non-members to post.

Anyway I think the trick now is to tag a channel using /debank notation if you are not a member and want to cast to followers of that channel.

Technically they didn't closed the channels, they mutated into some hybrid group/channel concept with members and followers.
