The current trend in Web3 is ultra-speed, as we can see with MegaETH, the first real-time L2, which has just launched its public testnet. However, the emergence of these projects also requires improvements in the global fiber optic network. This is where a new project comes: Doublezero The current internet system works well, but it is not capable of doing things quickly or efficiently. Doublezero has a simple goal: Increase bandwidth and reduce latency. I will simply explain how they plan to solve this problem 🧵

What is Doublezero ? Doublezero defines itself as an N1 (network layer 1) and aims to create a foundational network infrastructure optimized for distributed systems, particularly blockchains to solve the current limitations. What are the limitations of the current internet ? Current blockchains (Solana, Ethereum) rely on the public internet to transmit their data. Problem ➡️ This internet is not designed for the needs of decentralized systems. It prioritizes the economic path (cheaper) over the technical path (faster), leading to high latency and bottlenecks. Solution ➡️ Doublezero aims to solve this by creating a dedicated network, parallel to the public internet.

What is the architecture of Doublezero ? Doublezero uses an architecture based on two "rings" to organize the flow of data ➡️ Filter ring: The goal is to filter data from the public internet before it enters the system. It removes spam (useless or malicious data) and eliminates duplicates --> This reduces the load on validators, as they only receive "clean" and relevant data. ➡️ Execution ring: It's an ultra-fast, dedicated network loop that performs the essential tasks of blockchains: block propagation, validator synchronization, and consensus coordination. It uses private fiber optics. This separation allows for task parallelization : filtering and validation on one side, and block production and consensus on the other. --> Reduces the required bandwidth

Physical infrastructure ➡️ DoubleZero relies on a global network of private fiber optic cables, often underutilized. They encourage independent contributors (telecom companies, bandwidth providers) to connect their fibers to the network. ➡️ Doublezero is also permissionless: Anyone with fiber can join (under certain conditions).

Doublezero is a very young project that raised $28M at the beginning of March, with DragonFly in particular. I think it's a project to keep a close eye on. They are tackling a problem that no one has addressed before, and it's the kind of progress I love to see in crypto. Definitely one to watch 👀
