The Tom Green Documentary is a great watch if you're a fan of him. I guess I never really considered how much of a pioneer he has been during his career. Tom paved the way for Jackass. He paved the way for Joe Rogan by essentially inventing the podcast. His original show was one of the first unscripted shows on TV other than Candid Camera. He is truly is a Canadian treasure (from nearby Ottawa). This movie made me realize how much I missed his content and unique approach to comedy. I look forward to his new show and stand up special. I'm kind of stoked he has returned to Canada to launch a new era of his career. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hjdTJ-H19gY

Oh I see TPB and a couple other public trackers on the right there. You only use public trackers? I should send you some invites for a couple proper private trackers. The difference is night and day.

I'd imagine usenet is still where releases typically originate before they get dropped on private trackers and later public trackers? I guess I always kind of had an issue with paying for a subscription to pirate. Sort of defeats the purpose to a degree. Has the UI on Usenet improved at all in the last say 15 years?

> I guess I always kind of had an issue with paying for a subscription to pirate same, up to a point. public torrents were better back then with TPB, KAT, etc. now you need to have private trackers (often russian) and maintain a crazy ratio that's hard with slow ISP upload speeds. with usenet i can utilize the full gigabit downlink so episodes of shows download in 2 minutes and there is no seeding. the traffic is also encrypted. total yearly cost is lower than 1 month of all streaming services combined.

I maintain current account status with 4 private trackers, 2 of which I've been a member of for roughly 20 years, though 95% of the time I'm using 1 specifically. Certainly back in the day it was a bit of a task to keep a decent ratio, and only partially because I had DSL/5gb cable for so many years. I did build up a bit of a ratio after awhile and stopped thinking about it but at some juncture these sites started giving out points just for having torrents seeding, even when not actively uploading. These points can be exchanged for ratio credit or other things. All the private trackers also have plenty of free leech options as well. I guess to a small extent it helps that I don't have a 4K TV so no need for 4K rips. 99% of torrents on my sites are so healthy that I can download 1gb in 60 seconds, sometimes less. Do releases still become unavailable after a little while on usenet? With private trackers stuff stays up for years often.

wow 20 years is a great track record. i lost access to what.cd due to a poor ratio :( my uplink never surpassed 50 Mbps at home until now. yeah, takedowns for popular things happen often if the releases are not obfuscated enough. they are quickly reuploaded though. i use public torrents as fallback and for some non-english content. stats from when i switched from NZBget to SABnzbd β€” around 50TB in 2 years.

Man, I miss oink.me and what.cd. Waffles.fm was alright but not quite as good as oink and what. When I got my 80gb iPod I even had it inscribed on the back with some sorta "RIP Oink" cause the site had just been shutdown at that point. I'm can't recall losing access to any private trackers due to ratio issues, but certainly had to be selective about what I was grabbing during periods of time. That said, tons of the people I've sent invites to over the years have had access removed for ratio. The place I've been at the last 6 or 7 years now is kinda just on the edge of town and so I only got a fibre connection for the first time maybe 2 years ago or so? Until that point I don't think I ever had more than even 5mbps up but now I've got something stupid like 1.5gbs down and 950mbs up haha. I'm surprised usenet providers bother taking stuff down. I moreso meant just kinda falling off the server after some time. I feel like that happened back 20ish years ago when I used usenet at periods. Maybe I'm mistaken.

RIP indeed. i didn't have access to oink but my friend would download stuff for me to his seedbox. there's been a crackdown from studios and they send DMCAs pretty quickly for most popular releases but if you're grabbing stuff instantly you don't notice. properly obfuscated uploads on private indexers stay up.
