The next Ethereum upgrade, Pectra, is expected to go live in 1-2 months as testing wraps up—and there's something for everyone!

Pectra will double Ethereum's blob capacity to further scale L2s, will grant smart contract-like capabilities to every single Ethereum address.

This will give wallets and application devs the tools to significantly improve onchain experience, and will also enable stake consolidation and compounding for validators.

In this week's core dev call chaired by @ralexstokes, the decision on Pectra's mainnet activation was postponed to next week's call, to allow time for another testnet (Hoodi) to complete the Pectra migration.

There were also discussions about including EIP-7688 in the subsequent upgrade after Pectra, as well when to launch history expiry, but both decisions were deferred for later.

@tim and Mario Havel coauthored a post-mortem on the Holešky Pectra incident, covering how the testnet managed to finalize after 2 weeks of issues, as well as learnings from the process: https://github.com/ethereum/pm/blob/master/Pectra/holesky-postmortem.md

 from the Applied Research Group co-wrote an article summarizing the current exit process for Ethereum validators and how it's changing in the Pectra upgrade.

In brief, Ethereum's validators are fundamental to protocol security, making it essential that they can't exit without proper safeguards. Given that Pectra introduces validator consolidation and compounding of stake, we can no longer assume 1 validator = 32 ETH, which requires changes to the exit queue dynamics and the way the protocol processes sweeps.
