yes, there is a user recommendation list. believe it takes into account engagement score, mutual interests, etc. and yes, that means i didn't really "earn" all of my followers BUT i can promise you i didn't buy them

Not including your account but when I joined a few days ago I was following around 60 accounts - I didn’t choose to do so. Those accounts are with many followers usually, selected according to my interests I guess

When new users created their very first account, the system will recommend you a bunch of active users here. So you might be included into the list. Personally I got like 72 recommendations and I followed it all.
