Change my mind: ERC-20 should have enforced 18 decimals. Projects gain little value from setting a different number of decimals, but they impose technical debt on the ecosystem by forcing developers to handle multiple decimal systems.

`decimals` is absolutely the worst part of the erc20 spec: 0) could be any number vs just being 18 1) is optional 2) doesn't have to be immutable A valid ERC20 contract can return `decimals` as 4 today, then as 6 tomorrow.

I may never have agreed with anything more. Everything I've done with DeFi has had added complexity due to needing to check + verify token decimals.
