The Miracle of Juliane Koepcke
On December 24, 1971, Juliane Koepcke, a 17-year-old German-Peruvian, boarded LANSA Flight 508 with her mother. Mid-flight, the plane was struck by lightning and broke apart over the Amazon Rainforest. Juliane, still strapped to her seat, fell 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) into the jungle.
Miraculously, she survived with a broken collarbone, deep cuts, and a swollen eye. Alone in the dense jungle, she relied on her father’s survival lessons. For 11 days, she followed a river, drank water, and ate what little she could find until she was rescued by local loggers.
Juliane’s survival is one of the most incredible true stories of human resilience and luck.
