Centuries ago, the bautu was worn during political votes so that people could cast their votes anonymously. Apparently Bauta was a Casanova mask. They were intended to completely conceal the identity of the wearer, thereby allowing men of all ranks to have a good time without being subject to later judgment or gossip.
