Ethereum

I'm starting on my eth dev leaning journey and I'm trying to sign up for a projectId so I can use rainbow kit as a step in my wagmi implementation.   I hit the error below from reown saying that wallet signups are not longer supported.  I'm curious as to why.   Was this move motivated by bots and spam problems from wallet connections?

Did a little more digging and learned about this founding round led by Union Square Ventures which led to the rebranding of WalletConnect to Reown.  

I think Ethereum would have been better served keeping WalletConnect an open neutral protocol funded by the Ethereum Foundation.   The move away from a native web3 app using their own protocol to a web2 signup with a database of developer email addresses and passwords demonstrates the hazards of this approach.
