Meet Joanna Canara @sereneobscurity, an artist who  transforms the mundane into the extraordinary, blending self-portraits with everyday imagery to craft ethereal compositions. Deeply influenced by the philosophy of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in imperfection—her work explores themes of mental health, nostalgia, and self-discovery. 

Born into a restrictive cult in Western India, Joanna found solace in art, using it as an escape and a way to process the world around her. Her photographs exude a soft, dreamlike quality, capturing raw emotions in a way that speaks directly to the soul.

Joining Instagram in 2013 helped Joanna shape her distinct aesthetic—dark, moody, and deeply personal. Her brother jokes that she could make a sunrise look dark, a testament to her unique approach to editing. In 2020, her piece *I Don’t Belong Here* went viral, marking a turning point in her career. Encouraged by this recognition, she took her art more seriously, eventually diving into the NFT space, where she found a global audience that resonated with her vision.

Joanna's journey into web3 started with curiosity—she stumbled upon crypto on Twitter, leading her to explore NFTs. With just 1 tez gifted by a friend, she began minting on Tezos, eventually attracting over 700 collectors, with her work even making it into the Tezos Permanent Collection. Beyond being an artist, Joanna is a passionate collector, holding over 800 pieces, thanks in part to the supportive photezNFTs community, which she describes as a haven of inspiration.

Joanna’s art is deeply intertwined with her search for freedom. Raised in a place where guilt and shame were tools of control, she now seeks to create without restraint, translating that liberation into her work. She experiments with double exposures, anonymity, and surreal compositions, leaving parts of her face obscured or fragmented, evoking curiosity and mystery. Her work teeters on the edge of beauty and unease, drawing viewers in with its haunting yet delicate allure.

Her goal is to continue spotlighting Tezos photographers while evolving her own artistic voice. She believes that art should make you *feel*—even if just for a moment. Observing the unnoticed details of life, from the way sunlight hits a cat’s whiskers to a heart-shaped water spill, she captures fleeting moments that many overlook. In her own words, “Art is being stripped naked, opening myself up, and saying, ‘Here, look at me, look at my vulnerabilities.’”
