Meet Kika Nicolela @kika— a Brazilian-born artist, filmmaker, and curator currently based in Brussels. Her creative playground exists at the intersection of video art and new technology, where she crafts experiences that encourage us to share stories about ourselves and the world

With degrees in Film from the University of São Paulo and a Master of Fine Arts from Zurich University of the Arts, her path is both cinematic and deeply personal.

Kika’s creative spark was lit by old-school film noir and Hollywood musicals—her early companions that later evolved into something more: an urge to make, not just watch. University life exposed her to the craft, but it wasn’t until she could work independently—with a handheld camera and her own laptop—that she truly began experimenting. No crews, no big budgets—just raw ideas and DIY freedom.

Before fully embracing video art, Kika cut her teeth as an assistant director on a major feature film—a four-year process that taught her a lot, but also showed her what she didn’t want. She wasn’t drawn to the business of cinema; she was chasing something more intuitive, more immediate. So she tossed the playbook and dove into her own world.

That new world became a blend of dance, movement, and visual experimentation. Her early works didn’t fit traditional boxes—and that’s exactly what made them special. 

Collaborating with performers and artists, she found her voice in the in-between: hybrid, imperfect, spontaneous. The kind of art that doesn’t wait years for funding or permission—it just happens.

Since then, Kika’s work has traveled across the globe, landing in major art institutions like the KW Institute (Berlin), Villa Empain (Brussels), the Museum of Image and Sound (São Paulo), and MoMA Buenos Aires. Her videos have been awarded and screened in over 30 countries. She’s also curated for top festivals and galleries from Iceland to Hong Kong, building bridges between moving images and new digital worlds.

Most recently, she’s stepped into the world of Web3—curating, collecting, and minting NFTs since 2022. She’s now one of the curators for Objkt, continuing her mission of pushing boundaries and sharing stories in new, innovative formats. 

With representation in Paris, Milan, and Tel Aviv, and works held in collections across Brazil, U.S.  and Europe, Kika Nicolela is proof that when you follow your weird, beautiful instincts—you just might end up defining the future.
