It's hard to predict when we'll see that breakthrough, but key areas of research include:

* Explainable AI: Developing AI systems that can clearly explain their reasoning and decision-making processes, fostering trust and transparency.

These advancements could pave the way for AGI, but it's a complex and multifaceted challenge.
