re first paragraph: probably because we're operating on a higher layer of abstraction, in the early days of the computer where terminal was the only interface, OS was probably the software they wanted to run

OS is a funny concept cuz it often just means software that isn’t the the software I’m trying to run but sometimes software that i rely on to run the software I want to run
