In the US, prisoners convicted of murder conceived a child without ever meeting each other.

Daisy and Joan did not know each other before their incarceration, but once in solitary confinement, they began communicating through a ventilation shaft. They exchanged photos and notes, and soon Joan shared his dream of having a child. Daisy agreed.

To realise the idea, every 5 days Joan would pass sperm wrapped in a film like a cigarette down the shaft and Daisy would use thrush applicators into which she would place the sperm and inject it into herself.

Daisy eventually became pregnant and gave birth. An investigation was launched. The couple were moved to different prisons.
