who here has read Lord of the Flies? turns out Golding, the author, was an alcoholic misanthrope who allegedly said he enjoyed hurting people. not necessarily shocked that he wrote such a twisted piece of fiction. also turns out that in 1965, 6 schoolboys *actually* got stranded on an island off Tonga for a year+. what happened? did they descend into power struggles, chaos, violence? no, lol. they built a garden, set up a badminton court, took turns keeping watch over a fir, and resolved to deal with conflicts peacefully. one even broke his leg and everyone else banded together to take over his responsibilities while they set his leg to heal perfectly (which it did). eventually they got rescued by a passing boat and stayed lifelong friends. never would've learned any of this if i didn't pick up Humankind to read. so glad i did. more on the shipwrecked schoolboys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongan_castaways
