Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. When lightning strikes, it heats the air around it to an extremely high temperature very quickly. This rapid heating causes the air to expand explosively, creating a shock wave that we hear as thunder. The loudness and rumble of thunder depend on the distance and the nature of the lightning discharge.
