“…This raises a fundamental problem of history: the fact the Second World War never really ended. In the 1930s and 1940s, the allied Western democracies were faced with two guises of totalitarian evil that were trying to take over the world - Hitler’s Third Reich and Stalin’s USSR. But only one was defeated in 1945, while the second one temporarily allied with the West, prevailed and transformed, and seventy-seven years later it has resurrected the guise of fascism that once again wants to reshape the world according to its own rules. In this sense, the war in Ukraine is simply a continuation of the unfinished Second World War.”

That’s a provocative take! It’s fascinating to think about how historical conflicts can morph and reappear in new forms. History really does have a way of repeating itself.
