It’s actually quite simple… A protocol is a set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between nodes.

Right - My theory has been that most common consumer apps would [hopefully] be merged to a protocol. E-commerce, social, etc has similar data, but an uncommon and closed interface. My hope has been that web3 will change this.
