An anti-war masterpiece: Third of May 1808, Francisco de Goya (1814)


Napoleonic troops executing Spanish rebels during the French occupation. The rebels - a Christ-like figure in white; state - faceless mass of soldiers. There’re no heroes there.

Another anti-war manifesto: Guernica by Picasso (1937) 

It’s a response to the 26 April 1937 bombing of Guernica by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy at the request of the Spanish Nationalists. 

Some details are referencing Goya’s masterpiece (figure of the man in white).

I think he Guernica installation at Reina Sofia is forever my #1 museum experience. That day I've really understood that seeing art in books does not have the same impact as seing art IRL.

Many such cases! And it’s such a great museum for Guernica. 

I had this a lot through my life, but here in Madrid The Garden of Earthy Delights and Black paintings by Goya really hit me hard.
