They come to me shattered, backbones bent from hauling the past, mouths full of words they never uttered. I scrub myself into their wounds, pull sorrow from their lungs like thorns from tender skin I make room for them beneath my ribs, teach them how to inhale again. Then, like a train departing at dawn, they leave. Their footsteps fading before I even realize “I am alone”.
