What I’m excited about: canal developments in 1790s in UK innovations down stream from Newcomen engine that pumped water out of mines led to development of the steam engine Steam engine led to being able to move lots of mass using canals, which led to massive canal development in England over the next few decades

“The majority of the network was built in the "Golden Age" of canals, between the 1770s and the 1830s. From 1840 the canals began to decline, because the growing railway network was a more efficient means of transporting goods.”

very interesting a curious fact is that commercial steam boats proliferated only after 1805. So the UK canal system preceded them. Would you know how the boats were powered before the steam engine? btw Vanderbilt’s biography is a great account of how leadership of steam based transport passed to US ~1825 onwards
