Norway is home to the world's largest and most powerful maelstrom, the Saltstraumen. This natural phenomenon, located near the Arctic Circle, creates strong tidal currents that reach speeds of up to 20 knots (about 23 mph) and is caused by the tidal flow between the Skjerstadfjord and the outer Saltfjord.
