As a combat medic veteran, I donāt generally enjoy war moviesāhow could I? Iāve lived it. The smells, the sounds, the weight of it allāitās not something you can just watch and feel "entertained." But Saving Private Ryan is different. Itās my favorite war movie, not because I like reliving the memories, but because itās the only film Iāve seen that comes close to showing the raw, unfiltered chaos of combat.
The opening scene aloneāOmaha Beachāhit like a flashback. The screams, the blood, the overwhelming sensory overload. It felt real. For a lot of vets, it was real, bringing back buried memories, some weād rather leave in the past. That realism is why it stands out to meāitās not about glorifying war, but about showing how it feels to be there. For those who donāt know what itās like, itās as close as theyāll get.
That said, I focus on Living, Loving, and Laughing nowālifeās too short to dwell on the past.
