having been duped by a sociopath,  shame also ties into this. 
"how could i be so stupi?" -> "i need to believe that this person has some good in them because otherwise i am a literal jackass" 

its embarassing to be duped by anyone , esp this type of person. alas duping is the only thing they are capable of.
