How does Coinbase get liquidity for new trading pairs? Do they have to buy OTC directly from whales/team? Trying to understand how a day one listing works.

Can you explain any further, does market makers mean LPs, otc brokers, the coins team itself?

It depends. Many teams pay market makers. In cases where they don’t exist, the exchange may work with them to help bring liquidity.
