How do you practice empathy with those around you? Empathy is about understanding. It is an important attribute for emotional intelligence and effective leadership. It leads to more positive interaction and effective communication. It can help to build and sustain positive relationships, foster diversity and inclusion, encourage collaboration, and make conflict management a smoother process. Leaders should be able to have understanding and compassion towards those who they are leading. Being Being able to recognize that each person will learn and perceive things differently and managing towards those will allow people to feel more comfortable, resulting in less mistakes or confidence to lean on you if they have questions or are unsure. Having empathy and understanding can be difficult when needing to enforce discipline. Empathy should not result in allowing things to slide, but instead working towards a solution. In some cases, the solution could still be harsh even with empathy being considered.

It offers you a sense of how your actions and decisions impact other. It involves experiencing another person's point of view, rather than just one's own, and enables prosocial or helping behaviors that come from within, rather than being forced.
