Before trekking with gorillas, I’ll spend time in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, staying at the Hôtel des Mille Collines. This hotel became a refuge during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, a story depicted in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda starring Don Cheadle.

I didn’t realize its historical significance when I booked but now feel inspired to embrace this history. I plan to visit the Kigali Genocide Museum to deepen my understanding.

Since the conflict, Rwanda has made remarkable strides toward peace and prosperity. I love that Kigali’s goals include “happy and healthy residents.” A city is its people, and that’s a goal worth celebrating!

The to-do list is getting shorter and my excitement is growing. Next to-dos include mandatory/recommended shots and planning a LOOSE itinerary of things to do in Rwanda. I prefer several daily options to decide in the moment. It’ll be a nice switch-up since the Ugandan part of the itinerary is set.
