Of the 18 or so people at Merkle, I think I know where 3/18 went to college. College is helpful for career if: 1. You major in something with hard skills 2. In the US, you got to a school that gives you an initial professional network But after your first or second job, most places just care about what you've done at the previous job (or built on your own).

I think college is helpful for many things — including sparking curiosity for life long learning, socialization & building independence, and yes networks. There really aren’t many good substitutes for that type of experience. BUT agree it is not an automatic in or necessary for many job markets. And for many majors it won’t give you job skills unless you pair it with internships. ROI is important — and I’ve had arguments with academics/phd types about this. I’m a JD/MBA so looked down upon in some academic circles (ok the JD gets looked down upon for many reasons outside academic circles but I digress). If you can afford to go to college/send kids there WITHOUT loans then yes, should definitely go. But no one should be going into debt for it. I’ve had this convo with my own kiddo (junior in high school). Public Universities are often great schools with strong ROI. Except for certain majors or some elite schools (or full ride scholarships) they are almost always the smarter option.

love this prof and thank you for sharing your journey and being a good mom i was on my way to get my JD and my mother told me she wouldn't cosign any more loans i'd probably be 300k in debt right now if she hadn't laid down the law i thought i was really showing her by paying for my own LSAT and LSAT prep course (like 1k at the time) it didn't sell her and she told me to use my teaching degree once i graduated ANYWAY i still want an MBA but i won't pay for it
