religious beliefs in technology, crypto, etc are some of the most nefarious they’re often rooted in an good, value-oriented impulse, but once enough ppl to form an in group believe the thing and want to memetically signal their belief/choice to others, things get irrational/stupid quick

good doesn’t mean necessary but even if necessary, I wasn’t trying to make a normative statement abt what should be, just what is. knowing that religions exist, worthwhile resisting dogma in forming our own opinions

Can you give an example of such a ‘religious belief’? I catch myself believing things my surroundings find hard to fathom. Like ‘at some point in the future, people will care about owning their own social graph’. The thing is, perhaps today I look a bit unhinged, whereas at that distant point in the future, IF people start to care about owning their own social graph, I will look like a visionary. So perhaps religious beliefs about crypto, are also helpful to create a culture, that drives innovation and scales adoption? So what are your examples of these beliefs?

Yeah, I subscribed to that belief too. Thing is, these beliefs are like insurance. You think they might be unnecessary, until they’re not. I think this goes for many ‘values based beliefs’.

you mean the opposite? ‘you think they’re unnecessary until they are’ I mean that specific one yes, I don’t think it applies to all techno-religious beliefs
