Homes have building codes and inspectors. Certain types of software require more rigor. Think autopilot for aircraft or FDA medical devices. The vast majority of software isn’t subject to that kind of audit/compliance, which is why it moves so fast (fix it later), and why it’s often buggy. Dependencies don’t help

And yet I can build a house to spec faster than I can build a piece of stable software

Houses are also cheating since there’s effectively no innovation, it’s not like we’re reinventing the foundations for a previously unknown constraint. I like to think about this comp though, mostly as a guide for how high the bar needs to go to keep pulling the future forward.

Hah! Just imagine if your house had to interconnect with all the other houses for the door to open. Software is very complex, comparatively… and with dependencies it’s effectively built on a foundation of sand.
