The longer you stress yourself out the more time off you need The quicker to rest you are the less stress you’ll have in the long run and the easier it is to recover

I have friends who’ve ended up in the burnout / breakdown part of the curve and some of them have taken years to recover fully or have yet to recover after months. Burn out is very real imo

The key to burnout is to stare it hard in the face, tell it to piss off, then finish the mission and fuck off for a month or two and remember why you put in that much effort

Also there are often situations where one finds it difficult “fuck off for a month of two” - e.g. running a company, taking care of elder loved ones, taking care of kids, a team depending on you etc - having responsibilities sometimes interferes with recovering from burnout

Outside of taking care of other humans, the rest of them can accommodate you stepping away for a month, call it 2/3 disconnected. If they can’t then there’s a structural issue with management or team imo but obviously there are always edge cases Don’t do burnout if you can’t manage it, like any power tool

I treat it like a sport, because I also enjoy work like I do a sport. For me, I don’t mind the long hours, I’ve always preferred hard work on things I want to put my time into. I still get sick of it, just like I got sick of snowboarding or baseball at the end of every season and then I’m excited to get back
